چکیده

We discuss two experiments ICANOE and OPERA that have been proposed within the context of long-baseline and atmospheric neutrino experiments in Europe. The joint ICANOE/OPERA program aims at further improving our understanding of the effect seen in atmospheric neutrinos. This program is based on (1) a continuation of the observation of atmospheric neutrinos with the improved technique of ICANOE/ICARUS (2) a sensitive νμ → νe and νμ → ντ appearance program with the accelerator neutrinos coming from CERN (CNGS) from a distance of 730 km.

Neutrinos from CERN to Gran Sasso: The CNGS project

The CNGS project (CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso) has been approved to make an unambiguous and direct observation of νμ − ντ oscillations. An intense and relatively pure νμ beam is generated at CERN and directed towards LNGS (Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso) in Italy. Two experiments, OPERA already started in 2007 and ICARUS T600, will try to detect tau neutrinos using large and complex detec...

The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of νμ → ντ oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neut...

Status of the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) has been designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the muon to tau neutrino channel. The detector is hybrid, being made of an emulsion/lead target and of electronic detectors. It is placed in the CNGS neutrino beam 732 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrino...

The CNGS project was approved by CERN Council in December 1999. This report gives a short description of the νμ beam to be built at CERN in the direction of the INFN Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS). The first goal of this new facility is the production of sufficient νμ in an energy region optimised for the detection of an adequate number of ντ produced by oscillation at LNGS. The layou...
